SCAN ACTIVITIES

Spelthorne Borough Council in conjunction with SCAN run the Spelthorne Design Awards. SCAN is actively involved in promoting good design. In the category Access for the Disabled, which is intended to recognise schemes that greatly improve access for disabled people, Wycliffe Noble represents SCAN on the judging panel. To uphold the quality of the scheme it is proposed that the awards will be on a two-year basis commencing in 2006.

The amount of work that SCAN can undertake is dependent on grants that we receive from the local council, membership fees and donations. We need new members to support us in our work, especially those with sensory impairments.

One way to make a donation and Support SCAN is when you shop online using the Easy Fundraising site.

SCAN members have been involved in a number of different consultations throughout this year.

They have met with Tescos representatives to discuss accessibility issues at Tesco’s store at Sunbury Cross.

Members have visited the new Church Lammas Lakes Nature Reserve on the site of a former gravel pit off Wraysbury Road, Staines, and provided advice. We have also submitted a proposal to the local highways department for a pedestrian crossing for Wraysbury Road to enable visitors to get to the reserve from the parking area in Lammas Park. Following SCAN's intervention, the priority for the scheme was raised from a marking of 45th out of 83 schemes in 2004 (and would not be considered before financial year 2010/2011) to 18th out of 94 schemes in an assessment that took place in November 2005.

Whenever possible, members have attended local area forums where we are pleased to represent the views of people with disabilities on access issues.

Our members have a broad knowledge of access issues and endeavour to share our expertise with the local authority, service providers, and planning & environmental developers, as well as individuals.

We produce an annual report for our AGM where we list the activities undertaken during the year. These are listed below;
