NOTICE OF WORKS TO HIGHWAYS IN SPELTHORNE
Walled Garden, Sunbury
The official launch of the Tactile Plans for visually impaired visitors took place
on Wednesday 8th October at the Walled Garden, Thames Street, Sunbury
on Thames. SCAN member, Architect Wycliffe Noble, welcomed the Deputy
Mayor of Spelthorne Councillor Caroline Spencer and her husband Alan.
Wycliffe opened proceedings with an introduction to explain the background
to the new scheme that will enable visitors to the gardens who have a visual
impairment to have a greater understanding of the layout of the gardens.
Guests were also able to tour the Sunbury Millennium Embroidery that is
housed in a specially designed gallery located near the main entrance to the
Gardens.
Other supporters of the event included Spelthorne Borough Councillors, Robin Sider and George Trussler, Robert Shaw and John Stamp from the Embroidery design team, Staines Shopmobility and Voluntary Action in Spelthorne. The visually impaired community was represented by Trevor Baker, Senior Committee Manager with the Borough Council and local musician Keith Goldson. Norinda Mohammed from NW Surrey Association of Disabled People based at Woking also came along to the event. Councillor Ian Beardsmore was unable to attend although the plans and marker posts were funded by a grant given to SCAN by him in 2007.
Thanks go to local photographer Vic Kettle for recording the event and it is hoped that some photographs will be available on SCAN’s web site at a later date. Finally thanks to Ian Dow for providing the Public Address system.
