Action for Carers and Employment (ACE) is a project which aims to raise awareness of the barriers facing carers who want to work, and to test and promote ways of supporting them. Surrey has three project workers, (covering either East, Mid or West Surrey respectively), who are able to meet with carers in their own homes, if necessary. They will carry out full one to one assessments of an individual’s skills, interests and aspirations from which an agreed personal action plan will be produced. The project worker will then research and provide information on a variety of work and training opportunities.

The project offers informal group training that gives carers the opportunity and time to think about themselves, with sessions on subjects such as stress management, assertiveness, benefits, returning to work and many others. Respite cover can be arranged and financial help provided for care costs and related travel expenses to enable carers to attend these courses. The courses themselves are free. ACE has access to resources to provide help with the writing of cv’s and completion of job/training course application forms. Some financial assistance is also available for training courses not run by ACE and related travel expenses.

For further information contact ACE at Astolat, Coniers Way, Guildford, Surrey GU4 7HL. Telephone 01483 565874 or email ace@actionforcarers.org.uk. Alternatively information about the project can be found on the Action for Carers web site at www.actionforcarers.org.uk, by following links for Action for Carers (Surrey) on the Carers Information page.

Spelthorne MS SocietySURREY ADULT LINKED DISABILITY REGISTER is one of Surrey County Council’s Adults and Community Care Services. The SALDR team has responsibility for and manages the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Registers, the Learning Disability Registers, and the Physical Disability Registers within Surrey.

They work with SAVI (see below), who manage the Visual Impairment Register and the Combined Loss of Sight and Hearing Record, to ensure that all the disability records in Surrey are maintained, updated and comply with government legislation in the collection of information from adults with disabilities in Surrey.

The Purpose of the Registers is to improve the ability of all statutory agencies across the county to meet a number of legislative and good practice requirements in the services offered to people with disabilities in Surrey, as well as enabling the production of relevant data reports for the planning of current and future services.

The Aims of the registers include supporting people with a disability by being a link between individuals with disabilities, carers and the service providers and to provide security to ensure people that who do not use any of the services do not ‘slip through the net’.

Also the linked registers will enable statutory agencies and voluntary services to identify specific groups by age, disability, geographical area, service use etc; for the planning of services and resource allocation.

Visit the SALDR website at www.saldr.org.uk to find out about how you can register. The leaflets about the registers are available in large print, with audio or signed CD, in Braille and in other languages from the SALDR Team, Surrey County Council Adults and Community Care Teams and Area Offices, local council offices, libraries, and other public buildings.
